This is what you will gain from step 2. These drills will get you in exactly the correct position in balance at the critical moment when you release the ball onto the lane, giving you the best possible chance of hitting your lane target and getting a good release. I will break this down and take the step part by part;
- The first important part of this drill is setting yourself in the correct balanced position at the foul line. With the ball resting on your thigh lower yourself into a comfortable release position, sliding foot facing down the lane, deep knee bend as far as is comfortable, trailing leg out to the back or side out of the way of the swing keeping foot in contact with the lane, balance arm out. The most important thing is that you find a position that is comfortable for you and with the ball hanging at your side you should still be balanced and not falling or wobbling. Now take the ball back a little and let it swing under its own weight remember to keep the swing free, next time back a little more and let it swing free again. The third time it comes forward release it onto the lane with a good hook release, thumb out early and try to feel it on your fingers. Just maintain the bend in your fingers don't let the ball straighten them but don't pull them into your palm either. The ball will normally hook off into the gutter but we are not concerned with that, your swing should be free so let your arm keep swinging to a good follow through, you should get two more swings. This is called a balance line drill because even after all this has happened you should still be in a perfectly ballanced position at the foul line, striking a good pose at the line.
- The one step drill takes what we have done above a little further. You will start about a metre back from the foul line, you are going to slide into the good release position practised in the balance line drill so the distance you start back from the line might need a bit of fine tuning you want to end up with your sliding foot near the foul line but never over it. Stand with all your weight on your none sliding or pusher foot lifting the heel of your slide foot so it is ready to slide. Get yourself well balanced with your ball hanging by your side and your balance arm out to the side balancing the weight of your ball. As with all these drills it is really important that you keep your balance throughout the drill. Start swinging as in the balance line drill but as the ball comes back for the third swing slide into your release positionand release the ball down the lane.
